Birth support

Birth support is a Mahmee doula on call for your due date window, with you at your birth in person or virtually. Birth support is covered by 10 health plans.

On-call support from a Mahmee doula around your due date, with you in person where you give birth or by video during labor and birth.

What happens in this visit

  1. Before your due date, you choose the doula from your Mahmee team who will support you at your birth.
  2. In the weeks before, you and your doula go over your birth preferences and when to let your team know labor has started.
  3. During labor, your doula offers continuous support, with comfort measures, breathing guidance, and labor positions, in person or by video.
  4. With virtual birth support, your doula is on call the whole time. Instead of being in the room, your doula is on a phone or computer, and you have direct access to them through labor, delivery, and right after.
  5. Your doula helps you understand what is happening and what your options are, so you can make the choices that feel right to you with your medical team.
  6. Your doula shows your partner or support person how they can help you.
  7. Mahmee doulas work as a team and back each other up during births.

Who it is for

For you if you are pregnant and want a doula with you for labor and birth, whatever kind of birth you are planning, with or without an epidural, vaginal or cesarean, including a birth after a cesarean. Your doula gives comfort and support alongside your doctor or midwife and does not give medical care.

What to have ready

  • Your birth doula, chosen on your appointments page. If you have not chosen one, your care team chooses a doula for you and lets you know.
  • Your birth preferences, talked through with your doula.
  • Your bag for the hospital or birth center, packed.
  • A partner or support person who knows your plan, if you want one with you.
  • For virtual birth support, a phone or tablet you can use for video during labor.

After the visit

After your baby is born, postpartum visits with your doula support your recovery and caring for your baby. You can book them from your appointments page when you are ready.
